The Meet
An unexpected connection happened between Limerick’s Jenny Corcoran and Cork’s Diane Barrett when they were introduced via mutual friends back in 2008.
The Proposal
Cobh woman Diane was always ready to pop the question to the love of her life, Jenny, but the perfect opportunity had yet to present itself, that was until Jenny organised a trip to see family in Dublin two years ago. Diane knew this was going to be it. She hid the ring in her luggage, chose a song (“Never Change” by Picture This), commissioned a banner and hat to be made, and, most importantly to her, Diane asked Jenny’s mom and daughter for their blessing.
Jenny was none the wiser, that was until she heard their song being played on repeat outside the front door. When she went to investigate she found Diane standing outside the door with a hat that read, “will you marry me” on it and a banner that had the words “will you be my person”; and after a lot of emotions, Jenny said yes and wedding planning started pretty much immediately.
Plans
A date was set for Sept 10, 2021, at the Cork International Hotel. Mary O’Donovan’s wedding celebrant was booked to officiate the vows and Dylan Clifford Photography was on hand to capture it all on camera. Videographer Rory O’Donovan filmed the whole day so the girls can keep their memories on hand forever.
The Day
The girls describe their day as “unforgettable.” “The ceremony itself was amazing and so personal and emotional. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room when Jenny first entered and walked toward me for the first time. She looked absolutely beautiful.” Both Diane’s parents passed away in 2013 so Jenny made sure that they were going to be a part of the day in a lot of ways by mentioning them in the ceremony and also having a memory tree with their pictures proudly hanging from it. Their meal was wonderful, and the evening was one they will cherish forever.
Although the girls said they felt a little anxious reaching out to wedding suppliers as a same-sex couple they said “every single person we dealt with was courteous and professional and couldn’t have done more for us. Don’t let fear stand in your way. The day is about you and nobody else so make sure you make the day about you and do everything that makes you happy.”
