Engagement parties are still relatively new in Ireland, and
can be a great way to celebrate your news-but are they really necessary?
An engagement party can be a great idea if you want to have
a small wedding or elopement abroad, or even if you just want an excuse to
catch up with family or friends. It is also an ideal way for both families to
meet and get to know each other before the big day. The ideal time to hold an engagement
party is less than two months after the question has been popped when the
engagement is fresh and exciting, but this varies from couple to couple and
there really is no specific time. Less is definitely more when it comes to
engagement parties and here are some simple ideas that are popular here in
Head to the local pub with your
nearest and dearest, organise finger food or make sandwiches.
Have a small canape
reception in a hotel.
Go for an “Engagement
Dinner” with your family or a group of friends.
A small gathering in your
own house (or a relative’s) with finger food and a bottle of bubbly to
Deciding who to invite can be the next hurdle, but inviting your
closest friends and family is generally the done thing, as it is inconsiderate
to expect people to travel both for your engagement party and as well as your
wedding. It often depends on who’s organising the celebration, if your parents
are throwing you an engagement party, your extended family will probably be
invited. If you are organising it yourself, it is easier to keep it just to
your close friends. Just remember that whoever you invite to your engagement
party may assume they are automatically invited to the wedding too!
It is not an expectation for guests to give an engagement
gift, but if they do happen to bring a gift, the couple should open it in
private and say thank you via a thank you card or even a phone call.
The most important thing is to keep it informal, so that you
can relax and enjoy yourself. Don’t feel the obligation to have a huge
celebration, or even to have an engagement party at all. No matter how small
and low key you go with an engagement party, it will still have to be organised
and paid for-extra stress you probably don’t need!
Keep it true to you and your partner's wishes and we're sure you have a ball!
